New research reveals emerging roles in Australia’s labour market

Jobs and Skills Australia has identified 37 emerging roles in the Australian job market in the latest Emerging Roles Report.

These roles may be new to the Australian labour market, experiencing fast growth, or representing new specialisations within an existing occupation.

The 37 emerging roles are grouped into four key themes:

  • Net Zero
  • Health, Care and Medical
  • Data and Technologies
  • Science and Engineering.

These themes represent areas where rapid developments are occurring, with new job titles and evolving skill requirements.

The report is part of JSA's broader initiative to provide detailed insights into the evolving labour market, offering invaluable information on market demand and the skills employers are seeking.

Emerging Artificial Intelligence

While new applications for AI are emerging every day, and it has the potential to revolutionise industries, streamline tasks and create new opportunities; evidence from current Australian internet job advertisement data suggests the take up of AI to date is modest and concentrated in particular industries and occupations. AI skills were most prevalent in technical fields, there was also growing interest in more general roles, such as Advertising and Marketing Professionals and Accountants.

The Emerging Roles Report used data from online job advertisements and validated this information against the 2021 Census of Population and Housing to create comprehensive profiles of these roles.
