Hiring eases and recruitment challenges decline nationwide

The Recruitment Experiences and Outlook Survey (REOS) September Quarter 2024 Results reveals that both recruitment activity and hiring challenges are easing across the country.

Queensland led the states with a 52% recruitment rate, surpassing the national average of 44%, while the Northern Territory recorded the highest rate among territories at 66%. South Australia and Victoria had the lowest recruitment rates, at 36% and 37%, respectively.

Over the past year, recruitment rates have fallen across all states and territories, with South Australia seeing the largest decline (down 11 points), followed by the ACT and Victoria.

Hiring challenges have also decreased nationwide. Inner regional areas continue to face the most difficulty, with 57% of employers reporting challenges, compared to 47% in major cities.

Among industries, Accommodation and Food Services had the highest recruitment rate at 59%, while Construction faced the most hiring challenges (59%). Recruitment difficulty eased across all job sectors, with notable relief for Technicians and Trades Workers, where hiring difficulty dropped by 12 points over the year.
