While Australian skills needs have become more complex, there has never been more opportunity to upskill or reskill. This National Skills Week, we at Jobs and Skills Australia are pleased to help celebrate the theme ‘VET: It’s a Gamechanger’. This week is an opportunity to highlight some of our most significant work on our skills systems, how they’re working, and how we want them to work into the future.
For instance, the VET National Data Asset (VNDA) shows us how critical tertiary education is to employment rates across all areas. Skills development is a significant factor in success in meaningful work. We know that continued skills development and training is critical to a successful career, meaningful employment and other opportunities.
As Australia works toward a cohesive skills and education system for the future, JSA is also looking to unify the way we conceptualise skills. JSA has begun work on an enhanced replacement of the Australian Skills Classification – the National Skills Taxonomy (NST). Submissions for the NST discussion paper have closed, but the discussion itself is far from over. We’ll continue to engage deeply and innovatively with stakeholders to make sure a National Skills Taxonomy works for everyone.
Meanwhile, we know our conception of skills is expanding. As an example, this year our highly qualified data analysts and researchers will commence a detailed report on opportunities and risks in Artificial Intelligence (AI). How might skills need to change in the future while generative AI handles more tasks, and how might we upskill to get the best results from this technology? We will make a substantial contribution to this discussion and to our national preparedness for these emerging generative AI tools.
By searching the Jobs and Skills Australia website by occupation you can view how skills interact in and what jobs work with skills you have, or what skills you need for your next career move.
Throughout the week, we are contributing to the national skills conversation by pointing to more of our analysis and insight. You can follow our updates on LinkedIn, where we showcase details on new releases and facts about the labour market, which we have plenty of!
