Emerging Roles

On this page

Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) has conducted research to identify emerging roles in the Australian labour market.

Emerging roles refer to those that have appeared in Australian job market data for the first time in recent years or are growing quickly from a small base. We have identified these roles using job titles, skill requirements and other job attributes from online job advertisements and have validated them against Census of Population and Housing 2021 data to create comprehensive profiles.

    Roles and themes

JSA has identified 37 emerging roles and four main themes:

    • Health, Care and Medical e.g. health tech, medical tech
    • Data and Technologies e.g. cybersecurity
    • Net Zero e.g. sustainability, clean energy
    • Science and Engineering e.g. biological and chemical science, engineering.

    Artificial Intelligence

Our research also provides a deep analysis on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its demand in the labour market in recent years, including information on:

    • the role of AI skills in job market
    • the demand for AI skills over time
    • what AI skills experienced high demand
    • the top 10 occupations with highest demand for AI skills, plus more.

    FAQs

Emerging roles are roles that have appeared in Australian job market data for the first time in recent years or are growing quickly from a small base.

They are roles that are becoming more prominent in their evolving fields of work or industries.

The roles represent a new field of work or a distinct specialisation within an existing occupation.

    Emerging roles are not

    • a new title for a role that has existed for some time
    • a prediction of a role that might appear in the future.

JSA applied a broad approach to identify new emerging roles in the labour market. The methodology combines both quantitative and qualitative analyses as well as ongoing consultation with key stakeholders. The methodology consisted of 4 phases, exploration, analysis, evaluation, and validation.

The evaluation process followed four principles:

    • distinct from well-established roles in the labour market
    • requiring new/emerging/diverse skills set
    • growing in demand
    • reasonably large size.
