Recent data sheds light on where employers are finding it hardest, and easiest, to fill positions, revealing some notable state, territory and industry specific trends.
The REOS December quarter 2024 results highlights shifting recruitment trends across Australia. Western Australia recorded the highest recruitment rate among states at 54%, overtaking Queensland, which now has the highest recruitment difficulty (59%). Meanwhile, activity was weakest in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia (39%), with Victorian employers reporting some of the least difficulty hiring (43%).
In the territories, the Northern Territory led recruitment activity, with 60% of employers seeking staff. Remote areas continue to face the greatest hiring challenges, although filling roles has become easier across both cities and regional areas compared to a year ago.
Certain industries and roles remain challenging to fill. Recruitment difficulty for Technicians and Trades Workers fell from 73% to 64% over the year but remains elevated. The construction industry still reports the highest difficulty rate at 61%, though this is an improvement from the 71% recorded in 2022 when recruitment difficulty in this industry peaked.
While hiring challenges persist, nationwide trends suggest employers are finding it easier to recruit compared to a year ago.
