The Recruitment Experiences and Outlook Survey (REOS) Recruitment Insights Report for December 2023 was released today.
Results show that recruitment difficulty eased over the month, from 56% in November 2023 to 51% of recruiting employers in December 2023. This figure is 24 percentage points less than the peak of 75% recorded in July 2022 and 14 percentage points lower than a year ago.
The recruitment rate decreased by 5 percentage points to 47% of employers in December 2023. The decline in recruitment activity is not unexpected given that many employers traditionally complete their recruitment for the seasonal period in the months prior to December and don’t start recruiting again until the new year. Employers were more likely to be recruiting in Rest of State areas (53% of employers) than in Capital Cities (44%).
The proportion of employers expecting to increase staffing levels in the next three months was 20% in December 2023, easing by 1 percentage point over the month. In comparison, only 5% of employers expected to decrease their staffing levels in the next three months.
The proportion of recruiting employers who were unable to fill their vacancies within a month was 43% in December 2023. This was 5 percentage points lower than a month ago and 19 percentage points lower than December 2022.
